Your Best Developer Isn't Writing Code Anymore

I watched one of our senior developers ship a complete API integration last Tuesday. Twelve endpoints. Full test coverage. Documentation. The whole thing took about four hours.

Two years ago, that same developer would have spent the better part of a week on it. The code quality would have been roughly the same. The difference? She didn’t write most of it. She orchestrated it.

She set up the context, defined the constraints, reviewed the output, caught two subtle bugs the agent missed, and pushed it through. The AI wrote the code. She made sure it was the right code.

This is happening across our team at Jetpack Labs right now, and it’s happening at every company paying attention. The most valuable developers on your team aren’t the ones writing the most code. They’re the ones who know what to build, why to build it, and how to verify that what the AI produced actually works.

Fortune recently called this the rise of the “supervisor class,” and that framing is exactly right.

The Skill That Matters Now Isn’t Syntax

For decades, we hired developers based on their ability to produce code. Whiteboard interviews. Take-home projects. “Implement a linked list in 20 minutes.” The implicit assumption was that writing code is the hard part.

It’s not. Not anymore.

Anthropic’s 2026 Agentic Coding Trends Report shows that leading AI models now score above 70% on real-world software engineering benchmarks. Developers using these tools report saving 30 to 60 percent of their time on coding, testing, and documentation. The mechanical act of translating requirements into syntax is rapidly becoming a commodity.

What hasn’t become a commodity is judgment.

Knowing that an API integration needs rate limiting before it hits production. Recognizing that the AI-generated database schema will create a nightmare at scale. Understanding that the “working” code passes tests but violates a business rule nobody documented. Those calls require experience, context, and the kind of pattern recognition you only get from years of shipping software that real people depend on.

I’ve started thinking about it this way: AI is like having a team of incredibly fast junior developers who never get tired. They’ll do exactly what you tell them, quickly and without complaint. But they won’t push back on a bad architecture decision. They won’t ask “should we even be building this?” They won’t notice that the feature you’re spec’ing conflicts with something the sales team promised last week.

That’s the human’s job now. And it’s harder than writing code ever was.

What This Means for Your Next Hire

If you’re a founder hiring developers in 2026, you need to rethink what you’re looking for. The old signals, years of experience with a specific framework, contributions to open source libraries, speed on a coding challenge, are becoming less predictive of who will actually move your product forward.

Here’s what I’d screen for instead.

Systems thinking over syntax mastery. Can this person look at a feature request and see the second-order effects? Do they ask about the business context before they start building? The best AI-augmented developers I work with spend more time on architecture and constraint-setting than on the code itself.

Review instincts. At Jetpack Labs, every AI-generated pull request gets at least two review passes with the agent before a human looks at it. The developers who thrive in this model aren’t the ones who can write the cleverest code. They’re the ones who can read AI output critically, spot the subtle failures, and know when something looks right but isn’t.

Communication that crosses boundaries. When AI handles the mechanical work, the bottleneck shifts to clarity. Can this developer take a vague product requirement and turn it into precise constraints an AI agent can act on? Can they explain a technical tradeoff to a non-technical founder in terms that actually inform a decision? That translation layer is worth more than raw coding speed.

Comfort with ambiguity. AI agents are fast but imperfect. The developer who freezes when the output isn’t exactly right, or who blindly trusts it because “the AI said so,” is going to create problems. You want someone who treats AI output as a first draft, not a finished product.

I’m not saying technical depth doesn’t matter. It matters more than ever, actually, because you need to catch the mistakes the AI makes. But the shape of what “technical depth” means has shifted from “can produce code” to “can evaluate and direct code production.”

The Team Structure Question Nobody’s Asking

Here’s where this gets interesting for startups.

If your best developers are now 3 to 5 times more productive with AI agents, do you need the same size team? The honest answer: probably not. But the naive answer, “just cut headcount,” misses the point entirely.

What I’m seeing work at Jetpack Labs and with my fractional CTO clients is a shift in team composition, not just team size. We run a team of six to seven developers doing what much larger shops would need twelve to fifteen people for. That’s not because we work longer hours. It’s because the ratio of senior judgment to junior execution has flipped.

Two years ago, you might have staffed a project with one senior developer and three juniors. The senior would architect, the juniors would build. Today, that same project might need two seniors and one mid-level, all working with AI agents. The total headcount is smaller, but the average seniority is higher.

This has real implications for hiring budgets. You might spend the same total dollars on engineering, but distributed across fewer, more experienced people. And the interview process needs to reflect that. You’re not hiring hands to type code. You’re hiring minds to direct it.

The MIT Technology Review noted that one of the early effects of AI coding tools is fewer entry-level positions. That’s a real concern for the industry, and I don’t have a clean answer for it. But as a founder making team decisions right now, you need to know that the talent you need looks different than it did even 18 months ago.

The Guardrails Are the Product

One thing I want to be direct about: speed without discipline is just a faster way to create problems.

We’ve seen this play out already. Teams adopt AI coding tools, productivity metrics go up, and six months later nobody can explain what half the codebase does. The code works. It passes tests. But it’s become a black box that the humans on the team didn’t actually design.

At Jetpack Labs, we handle this with a few deliberate practices. Architecture decisions go into shared context files so the AI model has constraints, not just prompts. If you can’t explain the code, it doesn’t ship, regardless of who or what wrote it. And we treat the review process as the actual engineering work, not overhead on top of it.

The teams winning with AI aren’t the ones adopting it the fastest. They’re the ones building the guardrails that make speed sustainable.

Where This Is Heading

I don’t think this shift is temporary or hype-driven. The trend lines are clear: AI agents are getting better at producing code, and the premium on human judgment is going up, not down.

For founders, the practical takeaway is this: invest in people who can think, not just type. Restructure your hiring process around judgment, systems thinking, and review capability. Build the guardrails before you floor the accelerator. And if your team is already using AI tools but you haven’t changed how you evaluate or structure the team around them, you’re leaving most of the value on the table.

The best developer on your team probably isn’t writing much code anymore. And that’s exactly where you want them.
